Seeing many posts here are in English and Dutch, I shall do mine in English.
I recently started playing, and so far I have been enjoying the game.
So far I have a job where I work happily everyday, and my own 4-5 companies. I joined eNL Army. I work and train everyday, I do the daily 25 kills.
I also upgraded my town hall twice I think. I have been trying to upgrade my companies but I have no idea where to get gold. (other than buying it for $)

Is there anything I am missing?

Gold is pretty hard to get after the start, when you start you get 20 gold for getting to level 20 and after that the main source of gold will be medals. So try to save up enough gold till you can upgrade your free trainingsground, this means that you will get super soldier medals more often and thus make more gold.

You are doing quite well then Mussie /worship

You can earn gold by winning medals. The medals can be found in your profile. 2 of the most obvious medals are the Hard Worker medal and the Super Soldier medal.

Hard worker: work 30 days in a row and earn 5 gold
Super Soldier: Gain 250 strength and earn 5 gold

Another one is leveling up, you will gain 5 gold per level and eventually only 1 when you reach 1 gold I believe. You level up with experience, you gain experience by working in your companies and fighting enemies.

I have also been saving up Energy bars and the bazooka parts, at what level can I assemble them?

You get 1 gold per level, no matter what level you are.
